Camping Tipz: How to Make a Makeshift Water Filter

July 19, 2010 | In: General, Health, Travel

Water found in rivers or other bodies of water should be filtered before they can be used especially for drinking and cooking.

Use a plastic bottle as a make-shift filter. Get a utility knofe and cut away its bottom. Turn it uoside down and fill the neck with cotton and even pebbles, if you don’t have cotton (you won’t have problems with this if you have a first aid kit).

Find fine sand and place about an inch of it on top of the cotton. If you have activated charcoal, place an inch of this on top of the sand. Next, pour course sand, then a layer eahc of fine gravel and coarse gravel.

Pour water unto this filter and collect the filtered water with another bottle or some other container. If you have water purification tablets, you can also add this to the filtered water. For double measure, you may even boil the water and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes.
