First Aid: How to Take Care of Sunburns

The sun can do a lot of damage to one’s skin, especially if it’s fair and very easily prone to getting burned.
To avoid sun burn, make sure that you apply the appropriate sunblock or sunscreen. This is true for everyone, whether you are fair-kinned or dark-skinned.
For mild cases of sunburn, gently apply cool wet compresses on the affected surface of the skin. You can saturate the cold compress with a solution of aluminum acetate (Burow’s solution) which is diluted with 20 times its volume of cold water. Repeat until pain eases. Make sure that the patient is hydrated properly. Let the patient drink lots of water as well.
Another method of easing pain from sunburns is by getting into a starch bath. Add two cupfuls of Linit starch to lukewarm water in a bath tub and let the patient soak in it for at least 10 minutes.
Be careful when applying anything to skin. Make sure you consult a doctor first.
For severe cases of sunburn, immediately rush the patient to a hospital. Not only will the skin peel and blister, but the person may develop a fever as well.
