Work environments are usually stressful. Effective managers know that a workplace that is always charged with tension can make the people in it less effective. Here are a few tipz on how to make the office a little stress-free:
Make sure that you make everything clear. Uncertainty about responsibility (its extent, limits, and divisions) only breeds anxiety and you don’t want nervous people walking around in the office, do you? Clarify what needs to be done and what doesn’t need to be done. Make sure that everyone knows what task he is or isn’t doing. Make an office chart so everyone can see and check for themselves.
Talk straight. Be direct, realistic, and matter of fact when you speak with your subordinates. Doing it in the right tone it is also important. Be cordial and maybe even warm but stick to the facts and avoid giving opinions.
Listen to your people. Sometimes, the feeling of hopelessness (of not being able to make a difference) can cause anxiety as well. Take the suggestions seriously and look into it and report back. Even if you can’t do anything about it, at least your staff will know that you do listen and have made an effort in their behalf. Don’t forget to make sure that you’ve got their backs.
