What to Look for in a Resume

As team manager, you might be asked by the HR department to pour over several resumes if there are positions being filled in your team or department. If you’re new to this, here are some pointers on what to look for when all you have as basis is a candidate’s resume.

Take a general look at the resume. It should be simple, organized, direct to the point, and easy to read. It should also be neat and clean. Look at the grammar and spelling. What impression would it leave you about the candidate who does not even bother to make his or her resume presentable and professional.

Now go to the details. Look at the persons experiences, skills, and specialization. It is better if you’ve already made a checklist of skills with which you need to compare. Look at the job history and find any indications of promotions or changes in responsibilities. You can also check how lojng a person has done a particular job. This may gauge how long a person has had to develop a certain skill set. Education may or may not be important, depending on the position needed to be filled. Check for consistency. Check skills with job history and experiences.
