For New Mommies: How to Cope

breastfed-babyBeing a new mommy can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting. Here are some tips on how to make sure your baby doesn’t get the best of you:

Don’t expect baby to follow your schedule. It has to be the other way around. Catch some z’s when the baby sleeps. Don’t be a supermom and try to get things done while baby is sleeping. You have to face it the fact that to take proper care of your baby, you also have to get much needed rest.

If you can afford it, hire someone who can do some of the housework for you such as cleaning, shopping, and cooking. If you can’t, then ask help from family and friends. Create a grocery list which you can give to a friend who’ll do her own shopping. You can always return the favor when the time comes. And your friend will surely be delighted to help you, anwyay.

It is not being rude if you skip entertaining. Although well-wishers can take off some of the mommy blues, you also need to have time for yourself. Have your friends and family call you first before they come for a visit. If you really are too tired to play hostess, then be honest and excuse yourself. They can always come back some other time when they won’t be greeted by a frazzled version of you.

For a few precious moments each day, when baby is awake, you can put him or her in a stroller and take a walk. You can also put baby in a bassinet and go to your backyard where you can get some exercise and fresh air. A few minutes of exercise each day can be relaxing, believe it or not.

Sit down when you can. If you’re done with some of the chores and baby is wide awake and comfortable, do something for yourself. Paint your toe nails, read while drinking a cup of tea, or you can also give your hair some deep conditioning.
