For the Elderly: How to Learn to Use Computers

February 26, 2009 | In: Computers, Self Improvement

computerIt is quite understandable why most older people shun technology. If things have worked for them so far, then why would they bother themselves with something totally unfamiliar? However, for the elderly who are curious and motivated enough to try something β€œnew,” here are some tips to help you get over your phobia and learn what all the fuss is about:

The first step is to take fear out of the equation. Most of us fear those that are unfamiliar because they are beyond our control. Do not be intimidated. You can learn. It may take you more time than how teenagers usually absorb such knowledge, but you will eventually. Just have no fear.

Next, take classes – either formal or informal. By formal, I mean enrolling in a class at a local high school or college. Most senior and community centers often offer computer classes as well. The advantages to this is that you not only have certified teachers helping you learn the basics, but you will also meet other elderlies.

Informal lessons can be taught by a son or daughter or even one of your grandchildren. It won’t cost you anything but if you are the type who does not like to be seen at his weakest (i.e. being ignorant about something), then this wouldn’t be advisable. But perhaps this can also serve as quality time for bonding. Swallow your pride and you’ll be surprised at how fun it could actually be.

Practice. You don’t need to have the latest gadget in the market (although if you have the means, then why not?), you may even just get yourself the basic hardware, software, and Internet connection. Explore. Have fun. Don’t be afraid to try out the different features. You may find yourself in a few tight spots now and again, but as you already know – experience is after all the best teacher!
