Taking Care of Elderly Parents
Although many elderly members of our society prefer to live in retirement homes, there are still quite a number who wish to live with their own families. For this to happen and for the set-up to work well, there are a few considerations to think about. These are some factors that will help you decide if your family is ready to take on an elderly parent:
Extra space. Is your home large enough to accommodate one or both parents? It is essential that each member of the family has his or her own privacy and independence. This includes the elderly as they should be allowed to pursue their hobbies and interests. Aside from this, you would also have to consider accommodating an elderly’s possessions. Where do you put them?
Role in the family. Although they got to boss you around when you were kids, this may not work anymore. You may have to discuss about what is expected of the elder members of the family. Although they would always be your parents and that their wisdom is still appreciated, unfortunately the older folks too would have to adjust to the fact that you are the boss now.
Financial capability. Will you be able to manage your finances with the extra person or people in the family? If the older folks have their own means, would they be willing to contribute too? Would you also be able to be ready for sudden illnesses and other emergencies?
