All US citizens is required to obtain a Social Security number. To receive the card, one must apply for one.
Some people get their numbers as early as after their birth as their parents apply for them immediately to be able to claim excemptions for personal or dependent tax returns.
For those who have yet to apply for their social security numbers, here is what you can do:
Make sure you are of legal age to work need the card to get a job. Those who need to collect social benefits and government services also need this. Those who have lost their numbers or cards should also apply for one.
Non-citizens who are authorized to work in the US can also apply for a social security card as well. Make sure that your immigration status and work eligibility are in order for ease of application.
Fill out an application form which you need to submit to your local Social Security Administration office. You can submit in person or you can submit by mail.
Prepare verifying documents that are required to accompany your application. Make sure they are specific and current. These documents are usually any of the following:
- an original or certified copy of birth certificate
- a US consular of birth
- a US passport
- a Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship
