Safety on the Streets
If you travel alone and have to walk in unfamiliar streets late at night, it would be beneficial for you to keep in mind the following tips on how to avoid being mugged:
Always walk with a buddy. If you can’t, then stay on well-lit streets and those which have lots of pedestrian traffic. This way, it will be difficult for a mugger to isolate you. You can always scream for help and people can hear you.
Walk confidently and with a purpose, even if you are literally lost. The more you look bewildered of your surroundings, or if you seem to be not paying attention, is like having a sign above your head that says, “Mug me!” Survey your surroundings and keep your eyes up.
Use the middle of the sidewalk. People can easily grab you if you walk close to buildings. Muggers would have the advantage of the element of surprise. Before you could have your wits with you, you would have been divested off your wallet and jewelry.
Do not advertise how much you have. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry, or anything blatantly expensive in public. Keep your jewelry under clothes and out of sight.
