Using Work Time Wisely
People clock watch for many reasons – the most common are that they hate their job and can’t wait to get out, they are bored and have nothing to do.
The best solution for the first is to look for another work which would suit your skills better. But for the latter, this is easily remedied. If you don’t want your boss to catch you with your obsessive and excessive clock-watching, then here are some suggestions on how to use your time more wisely:
There is always something to do in the office. The reason why you’re there is to work, and that is what exactly you should do.
Check your tasks for the day, if you’re done, then do tasks for tomorrow and even the day after that if you manage to finish them as well.
Go over correspondences and reply or resolve issues accordingly. There might be some urgent e-mail that is waiting there to be looked into so instead of checking the clock, check your inbox instead.
Clean your workstation and re-arrange the stuff on your desk. Go over files and throw away rubbish.
Make a detailed plan for future tasks and projects. Update your work calendar or your planner. There might be items that you can move to accommodate other tasks, or to free certain dates to make life less stressful for you.
Go ahead and take breaks. Walk a bit around the office for some mild exercises.
Keep books or software programs relevant to your work in your office. You can study and tweak them when you really have nothing to do.
