Avoiding Office Gossip
Is gossip and rumor mongering rampant in your workplace? Why do you have to join the bandwagon? Here’s what you can do to keep your nose out of other people’s businesses:
Avoid instances when you would need to make small talk with anyone, specially those who are notorious gossipers. Once you see them approaching, try to get away gracefully.
If you can’t extricate yourself from such a situation, then tune out whatever gossip they are saying. And whatever happens, do not give your opinion. Merely smile and try to get away as fast as you can.
Stick to professional talk and avoid giving away too much of your personal information. Whatever you do at work is already enough gossip material, why add more to it?
Stick to your own tasks. Get earphones or headphones and listen to some music (if you’re allowed, that is). This will appear that you’re busy and will keep you from hearing gossip even unintentionally.
