Etiquette has a place everywhere, even at a fastfood drive thru. Like any etiquette advice, good manners at a drive thru follows one simple rule – consideration. Here are some tipz on how not to annoy people when ordering food at a drive thru:

Study the menu board before you get to the speaker. Make your decision quick and simple. This way you won’t be holding up other people just because you can’t decide what to buy.

Minimize noise. Don’t use your cellphone while ordering. Turn down the volume of your radio or car stereo because not only will it hold up the line, but noise can also be pretty much annoying to anyone. Speak clearly when you are ordering. This will avoid order mistakes.

Have your payment ready. Don’t rummage through your purse at the cashier window. Have your card or cash at hand.

Double check your order but be sure not to do it while you are in line. If you need to take more than a glance, just pull over the nearest parking space and double check your order.

Go inside if you have a large order and have it to go. Most people who go through drive thru’s only need a few items. It will be unfair to make them wait if you have a large order anyway.

Don’t forget to say “please” and “thank you.” These are basic words of courtesy after all.
