Bringing an Issue to Your Boss’ Attention
Do you wish to talk with your boss about a certain issue without being, er, too assertive? Here are some suggestions on exactly how:
Make an appointment. If you wish to bring up an issue with your team manager or supervisor, it is always best to have the talk scheduled. This will make sure that you will have your boss’ undivided attention. This will also give you the time to prepare what you want to say. If you are currently emotional about the issue, it will also give you the time to settle your feelings.
Write down the points you want to say. You can write them in bullet points on a small index card. This will help you organize your thoughts while you talk, especially if you are the shy, non-confrontational type. Your boss will also appreciate that you get things to the point. It will save time and unnecessary chitchat.
Sometimes, when we talk about something we care about much, we get carried away. Although a little enthusiasm is always good to show how much a certain topic or issue means to you (and adds conviction as well), it is best to keep your emotions in check. With emotions running high, you might end up saying things you shouldn’t be saying to a boss. Watch for warning signs. Pause and take a deep breath before you get yourself into trouble.
Listen to what the boss has in reply to your suggestion or complaint. You had your say, now it’s your turn to listen. Remember that communication is a two-way street. Listen carefully first. When your boss is done, you can add points or make clarifications.
Thank your boss or supervisor for taking time to see you. If your boss promised results, then have the patience to wait for them before you bug for follow-ups.
