How to Buy Quality Clothes

March 18, 2009 | In: Apparel

clothesHere are a few tis Check the stitching.
About 10 to 12 stitches per inch is ideal. They should be regularly spaced and reinforced, particularly at points of strain such as pockets, elbows, knees, and underarm seams. Just gently tug at these parts and check if the stitches hold. If they are loose, you know what that means.

Check the fabric.
Remember the following when it comes to fabric:

  • Corduroy, preshrunk cotton blends with a wrinkle-resistant finish seersucker, and denim all are very easy to care for. They are also very durable.
  • Run your fingernails over the material, if flakes appear, then they are probably starched, which means they are probably of less quality.
  • Starch is used to make fabrics look better. If you are buying knits, choose the ones which are firmly knitted as loosely knitted ones are more liable to shrink.

Check the pattern.
Always check the reverse side of fabrics that have patterns. Make sure that the pattern is not merely printed on but woven into the fabric.

Check the seams and buttons.
Narrow and unfinished seams will unravel later on so look for seams that are wide and are carefully finished.  Check the buttons if they are sewn on securely.
