How to Call in Sick

bedCalling in Sick

Calling in sick for work isn’t as simple as picking up the phone and telling whoever answers that you are not coming in. If you wish for the people at work to be more understanding of your situation and not to curse you when you hang up, then follow the tipz.

Call early in the day, and not when the working day has already started. This is to allow your boss or supervisor to plan appropriate staff and shift coverage. Calling in the middle of the day is both very inconsiderate and very rude.

Never text. Give the courtesy of a telephone call, and if the policy allows it, an e-mail at least. A call can give your boss the chance to ask questions about pressing issues that needed to be dealt with during your absence.

Use your sick days appropriately. Don’t call in sick a day every month. People do take notice of it and you’ll eventually get a reputation of being a slacker if you do.

Be straight to the point. Don’t give elaborate details unless you are asked. Just give your reason and any other important work-related information you need to give. Thank the person and if you promised to go back to work the next day, fulfill it by being a good sick person and use the day to rest.
