How to Calm Baby Down

August 2, 2010 | In: Parenting

Calming a crying baby can be tough, especially for parents who are new to their job. Here are some tips to help your child calm down:

Check for the more likely reason why your baby is crying. Is your baby:
Hungry?
Wet and in need of a new diaper?
Is the baby sick?

If none of these is the reason, then proceed to the next.

Find out what is causing your baby stress. Sometimes babies cry when they are in a certain part of the room, or certain part of the house. They cry at certains times of the day. They can also cry when they see specific people. Just be more observant and you’ll soon find out which stressor to avoid.

Distract your baby with a favorite toy or a blanket. Some babies grow attach to some objects that they have with them. Better bring this toy or blanket when you go out so that baby can have something familiar with him.

Check if baby is feeling too cold or too warm. If a baby is sweaty, or if a baby is shivering then you’ll know what it is. Make sure that you dress your child appropriately to the temperature.

Massage your baby. Just be sure you know what you’re doing. You can read books on how to properly gve massages to babies. This may help soothe your baby and calm down their crying.
