Canker sores can be triggered by many factors. It can happen because of stress, injury, menstruation, nutritional deficiencies and even genetics. Although they clear up in a week or two, they can still be bothersome and painful.
Use the following to help alleviate the pain:
- crushed ice or anesthetic
- mouthwash or salt water
- soft-bristled toothbrush

Consult your doctor about treating your sores with over-the-counter ointments. They may even give you a prescription for one. If the sore persists for more than two weeks, or if they occur with other symptoms such as fever, skin rash, and diarrhea, go back to your doctor for another examination.
Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush so it won’t aggravate your canker sores. Use toothpaste without sodium laurel sulfate. Rinse and gargle with mouthwash or salt solution after brushing.
If painful, apply crushed ice to the sore to numb the pain.
