How to Care for Pearl Jewelry

Pearl jewelry are a bit tricky to care for as they are very delicate and not mention very valuable. Remember to handle them with care if you want them to last for a very long time. Store them in a separate velvet-lined box so they won’t be scratched by gemstones. You can also opt to store them in a silk pouch instead.
Inspect your pearl jewelry regularly. Make sure that the silk chord that holds the pearls together in necklaces and bracelets are not fraying. Bring your pearls to a jeweler once every couple of years to have them re-strung. Insist on using durable chords such as pure silk thread or a nylon necklace chord.
Ask if you can have the pearls individually knotted to avoid having them rub against each other. You may also have your pearls cleaned professionally if you wish so, although you may buy a special solution so you can clean them yourself.
If you’re going to wear your pearls, make sure that they are the last thing you put on. This will prevent having chemicals from make-up and perfume building up on your jewelry. Wipe the pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth after you take them off.
For dull pearls, wipe the jewelry with a soft cloth wet with a little olive oil then let them dry flat.
