Care for the Elderly

Taking care of the elderly at home means a lot of dedication for the caregiver- may it be a professional one or if it is a relative. Whoever it is, make sure that the patient is being taken care of properly.

See to daily hygiene. Depending on how mobile the elderly is, they can accomplish their grooming by themselves or they might need help with shaving, taking a bath, and even going to the toilet.

Provide them with toiletries and make the bathroom accessible and safe for them. You can have rails installed in the bathroom so they can have something to hold on to. A rubber mat and a shower chair can make bathing easier and accident-free.

Meals -on-Wheels are one easy way to make sure that the elderly folks are fed well. If you opt to provide the meals on your own, make sure that you abide by the doctor’s orders.

If the elderly is having a hard time cutting and chewing food, make sure that you cook them soft and tender. You can pre-cook meals and if they have a microwave oven, they can simply heat their food.

Make sure that the elderly patient is never out of his or her medication. Check the medicine bottles to make sure that pills have been taken and if anything needs refilling.

Have phones installed in your parent’s home. If they can still use a mobile phone, the better. This is so they can easily call when they have an emergency.

Know the nearest neighbor if the elderly lives in a separate home. Have their numbers on speed dial as well.
