Nothing can beat a cold drink when it comes to quenching one’s thirst. Whether it’s water, soft drinks, juice, wine or cocktail drinks, the coldness of the drink really makes a big difference. But what if you forgot to chill your drinks? What can you do to make it cold in just a few minutes?

Take this situation. You’re having visitors for dinner and that will be in half an hour. When you checked the refrigerator, you found out that you forgot to put in the bottles or cans of soft drinks that you’re supposed to serve to your guests. There’s no reason to panic at all as chilling your drinks quickly can be done easily.

Your first recourse is the freezer. Get your drinks and put them right away inside the freezer. At least while in there, there’s a good chance that they’ll get chilled quickly. The canned drinks will be faster to chill than the bottled ones. And be sure to let them stay there even until your guests have arrived. Once it’s time to serve them, they’ll already be chilled.

The fridge can also do its part. If you’re chilling a bottle of drink, the best way to cool it is by placing it inside the refrigerator in a horizontal or lying down position instead of letting it stand. Cooling in a horizontal position is 50 percent faster than cooling in a vertical position.

Another technique is to submerge your canned or bottled drinks in ice and water. Get a large bowl or any big container. An insulated bowl is preferable if you have one but if not, a regular bowl will do. Next, fill it with ice and water and add some salt. The water’s role is to hasten the transfer of heat from the drinks to the water while the ice will help chill the drink. The salt, meanwhile, is important in lowering the freezing point of water even way below the normal zero degree Celsius temperature. If you may have noticed, the water in the sea never freezes during winter unlike the lake. It is because of the presence of salt in the water that’s why.

Now when you have made the mixture of ice, water and salt, submerge immediately the drinks. Then stir them to create a convection. The purpose of this is to allow heat to move out of the drinks and be absorbed by the ice. Leave the drinks there for about 10 minutes and after that, you can serve them chilled or you can enjoy a cold refreshing drink right away.
