Cleaning Jewelry
Although jewelers recommend having jewelry professionally cleaned at least once a year, it shouldn’t stop you to do it on your own. Here are some tipz on how to do exactly that:
For Silver:
Clean the silver with a nonabrasive silver polish which you can apply using a soft cloth. Gently work into the stains. Wipe away excess polish and buff until jewelry is shiny.
For Gemstones, Gold, and Platinum
Again, use a nonabrasive jewelry cleaner. You can also use mild dish soap and water. Dip the jewelery in the cleaner or cleaning solution. Rinse in warm running water. Buff dry with a soft, lint-free cloth until it is shiny.
Never use cleaners on pearls and porous stones such as emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, coral, and turquoise. Just wipe them clean using a damp lint-free cloth. When in doubt, consult a professional jeweler. Buy sturdy cases for your jewelry and store them there.
Wear jewelry after you’ve sprayed on perfume, and applied make-up. These can stain gemstones.
