How to Compute Your Car’s MPG

April 10, 2010 | In: Motoring

To compute your car’s mileage per gallon, here is what you can do:

Fill up your gas tank. Make sure it’s full. Write down the car’s mileage at the time of the fill-up. This is displayed on the odometer. Keep this note with you in the car.

The next time you fill up the car with fuel, write down how many gallons were needed to fill the tank. Again, note the current mileage on the odometer.

This time, subtract the second mileage of the first reading from the second reading. The difference would be how many miles you have driven since your last fill-up.

Next, divide this number (the difference between the two readings) by the number of gallons you put into your car at the second fill up. For example, if you drove 300 miles between fill-ups and you had to put 10 gallons of gas in the tank, the quotient would be 30. This will be your MPG.
