Depression can be caused by many things – like the death of a loved one, unfortunate family circumstances and issues, some medical conditions, etc. If you think that you are suffering from one and that has started to affect your professional life, then it is about time for some form of intervention.

Admit it. Don’t deny the fact that you are depressed, especially to yourself. It is the first step in making yourself be better. If you have a counselor available at work, then make use of this service.

Seek help. Professional help that is. Your doctor can not only give you the appropriate medication for your condition but he or she will also help you with therapy that will deal with the day to day hurdles you will need to overcome. Your depression may come from a physical condition. Your doctor will be able to diagnose this too.

Take time off. If you need time to rest your body and mind, then take that well-deserved break. You can also have your doctor sign you off for a week or two. This might help you deal with less stress.

Do your best. If you suffer from long-term depression, you cannot hide this from your boss. Do your best to accomplish your tasks. Don’t give your employers reason to terminate you not because of your condition, but because you are sloppy with your work.

Know your rights. Labor laws are different in each state/country. Be acquainted with them. Contact your company’s occupational health department, if you have one. They will provide you with valuable information and guidance.
