How to Defrost Freezers
June 15, 2010 | In: Cleaning

Here is a simple and efficient way to defrost freezers packed thickly with ice:
First and foremost, unplug the freezer from its socket. This is so you can avoid electrical shock.
Next, prepare a large cooler or a large plastic container and fill it with ice. Remove all the frozen food from the freezer. Separate meats according to their kind (chicken, pork, beef, fish, etc.) by wrapping them in newspaper. Put them in the prepared container.
Empty trays (if you have them) and wash them. You can soak them in soapy water as well.
Leave the freezer to defrost completely. Do not scrape or poke the ice off the freezer or it can damage the lining of the freezer. Instead, to speed up the process, you may put large pans of hot water inside.
Prepare a solution of 2 tablespoons of baking soda and about a small basin of warm water. Wipe the lining of the freezer with this solution with a clean cloth.
Plug the refrigerator back in. Turn it on and allow the temperature to drop. Wipe the excess moisture off the frozen items with a paper towel before you put them back in. Check if anything seems to be no longer fresh. If so, throw the stuff away.
