Group Discussion
Having a group discussion at work within the team when dealing with a particular issue can either go well or badly depending on how the discussion is going to be handled.
Appoint a leader of the group (if there isn’t one but usually it’s the team leader or the manager). Make sure that they are someone whom everyone respects and listen to. They should be balanced, level-headed and should not take sides. However, they will also have to break the tie when voting, if needed.
Briefly discuss the rules of the decision making. Make sure that everyone agrees to this. The rules are considered final Unless someone vocally opposes, or if majority does not agree.
Have the discussion. Make sure that each member is allowed to give their own perspective. Stick to the rules and keep time constraints, and anything else indicated there. There should be no exceptions. The leader should mediate when discussions start to become heated, personal, or if it’s getting off-topic.
Once the issue and solutions are presented, you may now call for a vote. The leader should break the tie if needed. Always keep the other suggestions at hand as, if the top decision proves to be unsuccessful, the second most popular choice will then be considered.
