How to Do a Backflip

Ever wondered how the young boys, gymnasts and even the divers do their backflip? You’ve seen guys doing hiphop and breakdance stunts do this. Not to forget the divers and gymnasts, of course, who have learned this as part of their routine. A backflip may look easy when you watch the guys do them with gusto but it takes a lot of practice and some skills to be able to successfully do this without hurting yourself.

Known as the back tuck, the backflip is a dangerous stunt that not every young boy or girl should do on his own even at home. In gymnastics, this is one of the basic moves that students have to learn. But if you’re really bent on learning it, perhaps you can ask the help of a gymnast instructor or professional dance or fitness instructor. For first timers, it’s ideal to do an assisted backflip as you’re learning it.

Practicing the backflip should be done in an open space with a soft mat. At least when you fall, there’s something to support your back, head and other parts of the body. A gym that has a mat can be the best place to do it. A wide trampoline is also ideal as it can even allow for a higher jump. Avoid small areas and a concrete floor as you’ll likely get yourself injured there.

Before you practice, be sure to do some stretching exercises for the benefit of your muscles. While stretching, psyche yourself up as well that you’re not afraid to do the backflip. Have confidence in yourself that you can do it because being fearful will only make you more hesitant.

Next, stand upright with your feet apart and your hands over your head. Positioning your feet apart from each other is important to gain the right balance for your body.

From there, assume a squatting position with your knees at a 90 degree angle while at the same time swinging your arms up and down. With your knees bent, it will be easy for you to push yourself off the ground. This will prepare you for your backflip.

Now on the count of three, push your feet on the ground for a high jump while swinging your arms over your head. Lean back as strong as you can.

While at the peak of your jump, you can put your arms behind you or hold your knees. And then try to see where you’re going to land. For divers and those who can make a very high jump, they can make variations by tucking their knees on their chest at the peak and stretch their bodies as they’re about to land.

There are two ways to land after the backflip. It’s either with your two hands or with your two feet just like those expert gymnasts. When you land on your feet, make sure that you bend them to keep your balance and to reduce the impact of your landing. If you’re out of balance, then just bend down and support yourself with your two hands.
