Drying flowers is an effective way of preserving blooms, making them great for year-round floral
arrangements. Loose flowers and leaves can also make decorations for cards and other hand-crafted
projects.

There are two ways to make dried flowers, one is the air-dry method, and the other is the box method.

Air Dry Method

Choose how you want your dried flowers to look like. Drying them in a warm, dry, and brightly lit place will give flowers a brighter color. Drying them in a more humid spot will give them a duller color.

Use flowers that have blossoms that are half-open. Do not detach them from their stems. Remove the leaves off the stem, except those closest to the flower itself.

Gather 10 stems together and secure them with rubber bands or tie them with a string. Hang the bundle in your spot of choice. If the place is well-ventilated, your flowers will dry after 10 days.

Box Method

Get an old cardboard box and line it with fine dry sand or borax. You can also use silica gel, whichever is available. Borax can be found in the laundry section of your local grocery store.

Place whole heads of the flowers face down in the box. Sift more sand or borax onto the flowers until everything is covered. Place the box in a warm and dry area. Flowers will dry in 2 weeks. Dahlias, zinnias, and roses dry well using this box method.
