Eating with chopsticks has been a trademark of the Chinese people. It amazes me to see them eat all kinds of food from rice and meat to noodles and vegetables using only those two sticks. It makes me wonder then how can they possibly do that when they all they have are just sticks.

But if only one believes in himself and learn the right way to use the chopsticks, it can be achieved with great success. Just observe the many people of various nationalities who have learned to use the chopsticks at restaurants catering to Asian food. You, too, can do it.

While there may be rules in China, Japan and other Asian countries concerning the proper use of chopsticks, those learning to use them for the first time should not bother so much about following them. The most important thing to remember is you hold them in a way that’s comfortable to you and that will allow you to get food from the bowl.

Chopsticks come in different types, weights, lengths and come in various designs. They can be made from materials such as bamboo, plastic, ceramic and even metal. But you don’t have to buy the best ones if you’re still learning because the cheapest and lightweight ones made of bamboo will do. Once you’re comfortable with the way you’re using your first pair chopsticks, that may be the time to move on to the other types.

To start with, first hold one chopstick between your thumb and index finger with the stick resting on your ring finger. Your fingers should be about one-third from the end of the chopstick and not lower than that. With that position, the chopstick should now be stable enough. Some beginners, though, find it comfortable holding the chopsticks nearer to the center part.

Now get the second chopstick and hold it as if you’re holding a pen. The stick should be resting on the tip of your thumb and supported by your middle finger.

Next, with the help of your index and middle fingers, try moving the tip of the chopstick on top and move it up and down. Practice doing this while keeping the bottom chopstick still as if you’re pinching somebody.

Remember that as you’re moving the top stick, the tips of the two chopsticks should meet each other. Just adjust the other one in case they’re misaligned. It’s important to keep them in an even position to allow you to pick up food. They should not be crossing because if this is so, you won’t be able to pick the food.

In picking food, practice with the bigger chunks first. Once you’re comfortable enough, then you can practice with the smaller food such as rice and noodles. Practice is crucial if you want to perfect this skill.

This is just the basic guideline to help you eat with chopsticks comfortably. There may be other variations such as holding the top chopstick between the middle and ring finger and so on. It doesn’t really matter at all as long as you’re able to pick food. So good luck in learning this skill and happy eating.
