Disappointments are a part of life and people need them occasionally to be stronger in dealing with setbacks and learning to overcome them. However, adults often enough find disappointments hard to deal with. What more children?
Let your children own their feelings. There is no use saying that it’s okay when to them it is not. However, a discussion is inevitable. It is crucial for you as a parent to help them get over this disappointment.
Help your children understand how this disappointment is just a minor setback and it shouldn’t stop them from fulfilling their dreams. Help them understand how this can be a learning experience.
Don’t just lecture. Instead of telling them, let them find out for themselves by asking questions instead. Find out together solutions on how to get better.
Never let them forget that you love them for who they are not for their achievements. Some children feel disappointed because they feel that winning or getting awards is the way to their parents’ hearts.
