How to Find Out If Your Kid is Addicted to Facebook

July 15, 2009 | In: Family, Home

facebookFacebook is probably the most popular social networking site nowadays. Although it isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if your kid seems to be too engrossed with it that he or she forgets that there is life outside the Internet, then it does pose as a problem. So how do you know if your child is addicted to Facebook?

Isolation. Your kid constantly feels the need to be in front of the computer skin all the time. he or she refuses to interact with other people (unless they do it on Facebook).

Incessant talking about Facebook. It is all your child talks about – as if it’s the greatest thing on earth. If time is spent more on Facebook than actual studying, or if he or she gets crazy if he or she doesn’t get the daily dose of Facebook, then the kid is addicted.

Logging in obsessively. This will be easier to detect if you have a Facebook account of your own (pray you don’t get addicted to it as well). If your kid is logged in constantly and changes his or her status updates every minutes or so, then you have a problem in your hands.

So what to do about it?

Involve yourself. Be a little more Internet savvy. You will not know what your kid is into unless you see it for yourself.

Make clear rules and set limits. Enforce the rules and have punishments in case the rules are broken. Involve the kid in setting these rules and punishments. Have him or her sign an agreement so if he or she breaks the rules, you can have something to show as evidence why grounding him or her is justified.
