Most of us who are conscious of our bodies want to have a flat tummy or at least we work out to achieve this. With a flat stomach, we can walk tall and with confidence to show to everyone that we’re a health buff. A bulging tummy is never attractive to many of us.

We know for a fact that numerous exercise tools and equipment of all sizes have been invented to help people firm up their stomach muscles. Every now and then, a new tool pops up. But if we really think deep and hard, one can actually get a flat stomach with just the right physical exercise without the tools and the proper diet.

The tummy crunch. As old as it has been, the stomach crunch is still one of the best forms of exercise to flatten the tummy area. This has to be done on a regular basis to firm up the muscles. Make sure, too, that you maintain the proper posture throughout the exercise routine to prevent injury to your neck and back.

In doing this abdominal crunch, keep your head horizontal to the ground and centered between your shoulders while lying down. Bend your knees ensuring that they’re not locked and keep your feet apart. Now as you bring your chest up towards your knees, always relax your shoulders until you go back down and up again.

You can do different variations of this exercise. You can put your hands behind your head and let your chin touch your knees or you can hold your hands up and let them touch your knees as you go up. Either way, you are still toning up your stomach muscles.

Stomach vacuum. If you don’t like the tummy crunch because of a back problem, the stomach exercise while standing is good for you. Stand straight with your back on a wall then inhale while contracting your stomach. To know that you’re doing this right, put your right hand behind your back and while in the sucking position, your lower back should be touching your hand. Hold for 10 seconds and then exhale. Do 10 repetitions several times a day.

The leg raise. Legs up, please! To do this, lie straight on the floor or a flat bed then slowly raise your right leg as straight as you can get. Hold it for a few seconds before lowering it. Do the same on your left leg and then alternate them.

Another variation is to raise both legs as straight as possible and hold them for a few seconds. This exercise aims for the lower part of the abdomen but if you have back problems, be sure to consult your fitness trainer first or your doctor.

Right diet. Eliminating fat in your stomach is important in achieving a flat tummy. To do this, eat a healthy and balanced diet and burn the calories. The right diet should contain green leafy veggies, fresh fruits, whole grains and wheat, fish, egg white, chicken meat and non-fat dairy products. Sugar, soda and saturated fats are a no-no.

Remember that a flat stomach cannot be achieved overnight. You have to work at it and remember to avoid the pills, supplements and fad diets that promise you a flatter tummy in a short time.
