How to Get Around New York City (By Walking)

February 3, 2009 | In: New York, Travel

The best way to get around New York city is by walking. If you go out in the streets, you see people flooding the pavements and not to mention the main road as well. But if you’re not local, better follow these tips to avoid being ran over by dodging taxis and buses or to avoid getting a ticket for jaywalking:

1. Always pay close attention to the flow of traffic. Even if you are in the right of way, especially at intersections, there are still drivers who do not yield or those who are trying to beat the red light.

2. Always stay on the right. Walk like you should drive – defensively.

3. Be on guard of cyclists. They race in their two-wheelers, and not all of them follow the rules.

4. Wait for walk signals and always use crosswalks. Do not copy the locals. It’s always better to be safe than to be sorry.

5. Get a map (Hagstrom is well recommended) and explore the city on your own. Try the more tourist-free neighborhoods as there will be little gems waiting for you there.

6. If you are less adventurous but would like to explore the city, nevertheless, you can always sign up for walking tours.
