Helping Kids with Math
Homework
Math homework is not everyone’s cup of tea (except the numerically inclined), and kids, even those who are only learning to do their sums, need the occasional help. Here’s how to do it:
Sitting with your children while they do their homework shows them that you care for them. It’s also good opportunity for you to find out in which areas they need some help.
One technique is doing the same homework together. Once you are all done, you can compare answers. If you get different answers, then you can both find out why you came up with that. Let your child explore. Just offer hints when needed.
To help with the multiplication table or arithmetic, you can use flashcards and make a game out of it. You can buy math flashcards in book stores, but you can always make them yourself by using index cards.
Use practical examples. Get objects such as coins or other stuff when explaining subtraction or addition and let them see for themselves how it works. They’ll learn better if they know they can apply them in real life.
