Increase Your Lung Capacity
The lungs are the major organs people use for breathing. On a daily basis, we breathe normally when we perform our work at home or at the office. But did you even know that you can increase your lung capacity?
It is very possible especially if you’re one person who’s always engaged in sports or any activity that mostly requires the use of your lungs. Apart from runner and swimmers, singers and those who practice yoga are among the people who need more lung capacity in order to perform well.
If you’d like to improve your lung capacity, it is recommended that you undergo a lung test first. Consult with your doctor about taking this test to determine your lung capacity. This is actually a simple test that requires you to breathe into a tube that will measure the amount of air you exhale.
Smokers need to quit their smoking habit if they’re bent on improving their lung capacity. Smoking won’t help at all because the truth is, it only lowers your capacity to breathe in air.
Deep breathing is a good way to start your day. You can do this in a standing position or while lying on bed. If you want to lie on a bed, put one hand on your abdomen and the other hand on your chest. Slowly inhale deeply and hold your breath for a count of three and then exhale. You will feel your chest expand as you inhale and contract when you let out air.
Increasing lung capacity is key to developing one’s endurance. For runners and swimmers, this can be achieved by increasing the distance and difficulty of their running and swimming regimen. The more the lungs work, the better its ability to take in more air. This applies whether one is on land or under water. Runners can also benefit from training at a higher elevation such as a hilly area. This is because the higher the altitude, the more the lungs need to work.
Swimming, however, needs more effort. But then again, both runner and swimmers can benefit from doing swimming workouts. With this exercise, you practice controlling your breath which increases your lung capacity. Running exercises under water is more challenging compared to running on land and this is good in improving your endurance.
Another strenuous activity that you can do perhaps on a weekly basis is to go biking. This is a good exercise for the lungs and the heart as well. Sure you’ve seen those stationary bikes in the gyms and they’re not placed there without a purpose. Of course, you can always enroll in a gym class where you will be taught the proper way of exercising your body. At least there, you have the option to tone up your body using the gym equipment or through various aerobic and cardio exercises.
Learn to do yoga. Many people have proven that this exercise really works and it greatly benefits the entire body. By doing those yoga positions, one can tone and also stretch the muscles while simultaneously being able to control and developing breathing.
