Is it time to change the look of your room? The best way to give a room a face lift is by changing how its walls look. You can do this by either re-painting it, or by putting up a new wallpaper. But how do you know which to do? Here are some tips on how to make the decision easier for you:
First, answer the following questions:
- How much is your budget?
- How much time are you willing to put into the project?
- Will you be doing the job alone or will you be able to acquire help from others?
Next, assess the state of your walls. Run your hands on them and feel for bumps and cracks. Spotlight on them to better see the flaws and damages. It might be that you will need a skim of new plaster (if not full re-plastering). No use painting over walls in horrible condition as the new coat of paint will only highlight the flaws.
Third, take into account your styling preferences and the current furnishings. Is the room small? A pale, subtle color will give it a sense of space and light. Is the room large with high ceilings? Wallpaper might suit it best. Make sure that the color and pattern you choose would compliment the furnishings as well.
Last, ponder over the pros and cons of wallpaper and paint:
You can choose lots of wallpaper designs. So if you are looking for variety, or something that would make more of a personal statement, then wallpaper might be a better choice. Wallpaper can also add texture to your walls so they may feel tactile and warm. There are different wallpaper varieties. There are those that are quick to hang, and there are also those that don’t have to be replaced and can be painted over.
However, wallpaper can be expensive, especially if you would have to replace it time and again. If you are not adept at hanging wallpaper, then it would also be a problem. Having a trade-person to do the job for you can also add to your expenses. Also, most wallpapers cannot be easily cleaned.
Painting can be a cheap option and is quite an easy task to perform. Depending on the color, painting can also produce calming or dramatic effects on your room. Paint is easier to clean, and replaced with minimal time, effort and cost.
However, painting requires a pristine wall. Painting over walls in horrible conditions would only highlight the flaws. Painted walls can feel cold and it may limit those who want more glamor to their rooms.
