How to Limit Your Kids TV Viewing

February 8, 2010 | In: Family, Parenting

How do you keep your children from watching too much television and from playing too much computer games?

Children watch too much TV because they have nothing else to do. You need to incorporate family activities early on in their lives. Show them that there are many things they can do with their time so they can be more productive.

Observe your kids interests and support them. If your kids show interest in books or sports or music at an early age, encourage them. If you can afford it, let them have lessons or let them join leagues. The more preoccupied they are with other things, the less inclined they will be to watching TV and staying inactive.

Stay active. Taking a walk (or walking the dog), or playing in the background can be a daily activitiy which can be done after homework.

Create rules on TV viewing and enforce them strictly. Discuss with your kids the shows that they want to watch. Regulate the number of hour sthey can watch TV or play video games.

Prioritize homework and chores. You can even make TV viewing and video games as a reward system for getting tasks done. Just make sure that the rules are clear with everyone.

If this has become a habit, you can even be confident that your kids will limit their viewing on their own, even if you’re not in the house.
