Make Jello Shots
Gelatins are not only for kids. They’re also for the big guys. If kids are crazy over these colorful jellos as desserts or snacks, well so are the adults although in a different way.
The big guys like their jellos as party food mixed with a little bit of alcohol. These are referred to as jello shots. This is actually made of gelatin also known as jello after the popular gelatin brand in the U.S. called Jell-O.
Jello shots also carry the name vodka jelly because it is sometimes mixed with rum, vodka or tequila instead of the usual water or fruit juice. Tom Lehrer, an American mathematician and satirist, is said to have created this jello shot in the 1950s. As an employee of the National Security Agency at that time, he developed a vodka gelatin in response to a ban of alcoholic drinks inside the base.
But while he may be among the earliest to concoct this food, the first recipe for this jello shot originated way back in 1862. It was actually Jerry Thomas who discovered this recipe in a book titled “How to Mix Drinks.” The published recipe used gelatin, cognac, rum and lemon juice. Specifically, some 30 percent of alcohol is used for every pack of jello powder.
Jello shots are popular as snack food in adult parties. These are ideal for teenage parties as a substitute for the pure alcoholic beverages. They’re also very easy to create that it even allows one to experiment with the alcohol drinks to mix with the gelatin.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- One pack of gelatin mix without the sugar
- Boiling water preferably 16 ounces
- Cold water about 6 ounces
- Small plastic cups or the so-called plastic shot glasses
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Mixing bowl
- Cold alcoholic drink about 10 ounces – vodka, margarita or others
Procedure:
To make the jello shots, first pour the pack of gelatin into a mixing bowl and then mix it with boiling water. Remember to stir the mixture well and allow it to site for one minute.
The next step is to pour in the alcohol and cold water while stirring the mixture.
Prepare your small cups on a tray and spray each with cooking oil. The role of the oil is to prevent the jello from sticking to the bottom of the cup.
You can now pour the jello mixture into the cups or glasses. Once you’ve all filled them, put your tray inside the refrigerator and allow them to cool for a minimum of two hours.
After that, you can take the tray out and your jello shots are ready to be served to your guests. Make these great food using different colors of gelatin for a more attractive look.
Any young lad or lass can do this for whatever type of gathering whether it’s for a group of friends or a family event. These jello shots are great for picnics, club get-togethers, shower parties, cocktail parties, frat parties and so much more. Try it with your mom or your friends and you’ll surely never get enough of it.
