How to Make Stairs Safer for Children

July 26, 2010 | In: Furniture, Parenting, Repairs, Security

Homes should be well prepared for children’s safety. Almost any place can be dangerous to curious toddlers. One very critical part of the house where you should be extra careful is the stairs.

Check your stair carpet if it’s frayed, uneven, or loose. Either replace it with a new carpet or take the carpet off altogether. If you’re opting for the latter, just make sure that the boards under do not have splinters etc.

Make sure that there is a stair gate at the top and at the bottom of the stairs. Keep them shut all the time. These can be installed easily and uninstalled in the same manner, when the kids are older.

Always clear the stairs of clutter. Toys, clothes, and other stuff should be kept away where children cannot trip over them. They also catch attention of kids and make it all the more tempting for them to go to the stairs.

Teach your children how to use the stairs, depending on their age.

Always keep your stairs well lit all the time. An energy saving bulb can be left on throughout the night.
