Negotiating Salary
You’ve finally gotten a job offer after a rigorous exam and a series of sweat-inducing interviews. Unfortunately, you are not satisfied with the compensation package that they are offering you. What to do?
Before you go to your job offer meeting, be sure that you have first one your homework. Research on the typical salary that might be offered for your position. You can ask around from friends who are in the same industry. There are also websites which show the going rate for different professions.
Once you know, you can base your expected salary on this amount. Next, consider the amount that you would find acceptable. Consider how much you are earning now. Consider the responsibilities of the new job. Consider the perks and any disadvantage or occupational hazards that the new job may have. However according to resources, you should move to a new job if it pays at least 10 % higher than your current job. But of course, this is subject to personal circumstances.
When asked what your expected rate is during the job offer, you may want to suggest a range where you give yourself enough room for bargaining. Just be honest and please be realistic with your price range (make sure you based it on the points above and you’ll be fine). Never give an exact figure.
Don’t box yourself in the base salary. Try to look at the overall compensation package. You may not get the but you may try to improve on other perks. Keep an open mind and remain flexible.
