How do you choose wine in restaurants? You don’t need to be a wine expert. Here are some tips when you find yourself pouring over a restaurant’s wine selection:
Know your budget beforehand. You must understand that wine in restaurants can be very costly. The wine selection have been chosen carefully to complement the dishes, and stocking wine can also be costly.
If you really have no idea what to order, the best thing to do is to ask your server for suggestions. Ask for the sommelier, or the resident wine expert. Don’t be shy when you tell your server your likes, dislikes, and even your budget.
Don’t be scared of the first tasting. Verify the varietal and vintage. The label should always be facing you at all times.
During first tasting, you will be poured a small amount into your glass. Tilt the glass and examine the color. Check for uniformity and sediments.Swirl the glass a few times and inhale the aroma.
Fruity and floral is okay. Musty and too much alcohol is bad. Swish around in your mouth. Swallow. If you’re satisfied with it, you can motion for the server to pour wine into the other glasses.
If you can’t buy the whole bottle, you can always order wine by the glass. This is also a good alternative if you don’t have that much of a budget.
