How to Organize Your Windows Desktop

November 6, 2009 | In: Computers

Are you one of those Windows users who clutter up their desktops? I sure have a tendency to be one. I really don’t like navigating through folders that’s why my desktop becomes the default directory for saving documents and downloads.

The problem though is that with all the work I do, it simply fills up in a matter of days. A cluttered desktop is like a cluttered desk – it just trumps productivity. So habitual clean-up is a must. Here’s what’s part of desktop cleanup routine.

1. Delete all unnecessary files. Just survey your cluttered desktop and I’m sure that at least 20% of those files would be rubbish fit for the Recycle Bin.

2. Backup inactive ones. Those files that are important (work related) but aren’t currently in use can be moved to a different folder. Better yet, back them up to your external hard drive.

3. Clean up those Post-It programs. These apps are handy when reminding you of tasks. Just be sure to do away with those notes that you don’t need any more. My personal freeware pick – Stickies.

4. Use Fences. Fences is a desktop organizer for Windows. It allows you to divide your desktop in clusters and store files under those clusters. So you’d always know which files are for work or which files are for other purposes.
