How to Prepare a Beginner’s Toolbox
December 29, 2009 | In: Home
Knowing hot to do small repairs by yourself is essential when you live alone For the beginner do-it-yourselfers, here are some tips on how to get started and be prepared:
Find a toolbox that can hold most of the tools you will need. You can buy one from most handyman shops, but you can always be a little more resourceful and find something you have at home to serve as your “new” toolbox.
For starters, you will need a set of screws, some nuts and bolts, a medium hammer, an assortment of nails, and a set of screwdrivers. Make sure that your screwdriver set has a Philiips and a flat-head. These two are usually needed for fixing appliances and to tighten door handles. A tape measure, flapper valve (that is the right size for your toilet), caulk, a vice, and a small flash light. You can always add more stuff as you move up the level of d.i.y.
Other things you might consider adding to your tools is a 6 or 8 foot ladder for accessing hard-to-reach areas. A stepladder would also be nice. Having a set of wrenches and drills would be nice but not that necessary for newbies.
