Preparing Children for Hospital Stay

Staying in the hospital can be pretty scary for adults, what more for children. Here are some tipz on how to prepare your children in case they have to be admitted to a hospital.

Familiarize yourself with the procedure or the treatment that is going to be done to your child.

Sit with your child and hold him or her in your arms and reassure him or her. It would be best to have a doctor explain to the child in simple terms the things needed to be done. The doctor can also help if your child has questions.

Whatever you do, do not lie. Don’t say that it won’t hurt when he or she may feel pain. Explain that there could be pain but that it can be eased.

Never threaten your child. Do not use the doctor or any staff to enforce this. This not only puts mistrust in your child about hospital staff, but it also just upsets the child more.

Arrange a ward tour if you can. This will help familiarize your child with his or her surroundings and help alleviate his or her fears.

Bring your child’s favorite doll or a blanket. These can bring comfort to an anxious child, especially if you cannot be around with him or her. Stay with your child if you are allowed. The last thing he or she needs is to be alone.
