How to Prepare for a Layoff
February 17, 2009 | In: Career, Family, Finance, Self Improvement
The moment you have dreaded for has finally arrived. Despite all the assurances you’ve told yourself, you still received that horrible notice of dismissal. Sitting and ranting or crying won’t do you any good. It will be difficult from then on but it certainly isn’t the end of the world. Once you’ve gotten the official word, then what you need to do is plan, and make sure that you follow through that plan. You’ll get over this soon enough.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have enough money to live on for at least 4-6 months. If you think you don’t have that amount, then start saving. Make sure that you commit yourself to adding to this emergency fund. Quit the unnecessary expenses. This money will tide you over until you can secure another job.
Go over your resume and get it ready. Revise and beef up where ever applicable. Start looking for other work even if it is temporary. In the current economic crunch, it would be a little difficult but exhaust all means – try local classifieds, Internet databases, recommendations from friends and relatives, etc. Try not to be picky about the salary. Having one, no matter how little it is, is better than none.
If you have a family, discuss the issue with your spouse and children. If you wish to save more, then obviously your lifestyle would have to change temporarily. Make the children understand that because of the circumstances, they would have to help out a bit in cutting back on the expenses, etc. Having the support of your family will encourage you to do your best in finding another employment.
