Preparing Kids for Vaccine Shots
Getting a vaccine shot can be a terrifying ordeal for a child. This type of trauma can be carried over to when they become adults, developing mild to severe fears of needles, doctors, or medical procedures.
Talk to your children before they get a shot. It’s better to prepare them prior to the actual deed. Let them bring their favorite blanket or toy which they can hug when they get their shots.
You can buy a doctor’s kit and play with your children. Letting them play the role of the doctor who will give shots to you. This will help them be more familiar with the procedure. After all, fear usually comes from the unknown.
During the vaccination, hold them close to you and whisper gently to them. Comfort them when you feel that they’re tensing up.
Some nurses apply a topical anesthesia to numb the skin. You can remind your children of this when you see them about to panic.
If possible, schedule a shot where you and your children can take them at the same time. For example, in the case of annual flu shots. You can go first and show them that nothing wrong is going to happen.
