Pre-trip Car Check Up
Preparing your car for long distance travel will not only prevent annoying car problems, but it will also ensure your safety by being able to arrive at your destination as scheduled without unnecessary stops.
Have a mechanic check your car a few weeks before the planned trip for an inspection. These are the stuff that mechanics usually look at for pre-trip check-ups:
- all fluids
- belts and hoses
- leaks
- tires, including the spare tire
- cooling system
- battery
- alternator
- spark plugs
Point out any issue you have already observed. Have problems dealt with as soon as possible. If there aren’t any problems, this inspection can take only a maximum of two hours.
Do a personal inspection a few hours before the trip. Make sure that all fluids or filled up. Tires shouldn’t be soft. Have them filled up, including the spare tire, if they are soft. Check your oil and fill your tank with gas.
Never leave without the number of a mechanic, or a tow service in your mobile phone in case of emergencies.
