How to Prevent First-Day-of-School Anxiety

March 16, 2010 | In: Education, Parenting

Young children on their first day of school can get anxious from being separated from their parents. They might also get scared of the unknown. Here are some tips on how to make sure that you send off a happy and confident child to school:

Check out the school before the first day. Take your child with you and go on a tour. You can even ask the head teacher or the principal if you can let your child meet the teachers, so they won’t be strangers to him or her on the first day of classes.

Slowly let your child adapt to the idea of going to school. Talk to him or her everyday about it and ecnourage by saying the fun and cool things they can expect in a school.

Let them pick out the things they’ll be bringing to school - may it be their bag, lunch box, supplies, or even school clothes.

Reassure your child that you’ll be back at the end of the day. You can give them a keepsake that you’ll get from them at the end of the day. Kiss and hug them before you leave and don’t forget to tell them how proud you are of them.
