Dealing with Homesickness
Homesickness is something that one has to deal with when working abroad and far from family, friends, and loved ones.
Thank goodness for technology for it has helped bridge wide distances with e-mail, chat, and other on-line means of communication. There are free instant messengers you can use for easy and immediate chats. If you have a web cam and a mic attached to your computer, then you can talk via web cam.
Don’t let work get into your way. Develop a constant (and consistent) communication system. Writing a short e-mail to your parents, or a short text message to your partner every morning when you wake up will help keep the loneliness at bay. It will also help you reconnect faster when you get back home. It’s just like you’ve never left!
Enjoy your time abroad and make new connections! The best way to help deal with homesickness is to make a temporary home for yourself. Don’t mope around. Befriend the people at work, or even your neighbor. Go out and enjoy what the place has to offer.
