How to Prevent Information Overload

Information Overload

Believe it or not, but there is such a thing as information overload. This happens at work when you are given a lot of things to process at work when there are lots of things to work on. This also happens when when you are in training and you are given a lot of things to work on. Instead of gaining knowledge, this can cause confusion.

When you are given information, assess it right away. The first thing you need to ask yourself is, “Is this useful?” Answering this question will help you prioritize what information you need to process first or what information you need to have extensive knowledge of, or what you need to file away in your mind.

Manage the information that is coming to you. Use technology instead of making it your enemy. Use e-mail rules for your e-mail. This will help filter the messages you read in a day. It also helps you manage your tasks for the day.

Avoid taking personal calls or messages when you’re at work, and avoid taking work-related calls or messages when you are at home (unless emergencies of course). Compartmentalizing can help you deal with the right information at the right place and the right time.

The key here is to prioritize. If you are able to manage your tasks well, then you can also manage the information that you need to process.
