Preventing Seasickness

Do you fear that seasickness can ruin a trip or a cruise? Here are some tried and true tested methods of preventing seasickness:

Before you take any form of over-the-counter medication, check with your doctor first. He might be able to give you a safer and more effective prescription. If you have no more time, try an anti-seasickness wristband. It works like an accupressure or accupuncture and stimulates the median nerve in your wrist, preventing nausea while at sea.

Eating ginger or food with a strong ginger taste (ginger snaps, toast sprinkled with ginger powder, etc.) 12 to 24 hours before the trip can also help prevent seasickness.

Keep yourself hydrated during the trip and avoid alcoholic beverages. Bring dry food such as oatmeal, bread, or crackers with you. Eat this an hour before the trip. You can also bring lemon drops or hard candy to suck on.

Position yourself where the least motion is felt. Avoid breathing in fumes and stuffy air. Just take deep breaths and stare out into the distance. Focus on the horizon and not on moving objects or the waves.

They say it’s also helpful to suck on lemon drops’ or your favorite hard candy’ as soon as the boat begins to move. They taste good and may help to keep your nausea in check.
